San Francisco Police Department, 21h of July 2004 9:01AM “Why are waiting here?” Detective Goldstrum asked. “I don’t know” McKinnes answered. “But L must have good reasons to conduct the final interrogation in the forensic lab.” He added. The detectives walked around the sterile clean room a bit. Many strange, expensive looking machines all around. The glass door opened and an Asian man in a white coat stepped in. “Professor Karuma, how kind of you to come.” McKinnes greeted. Karuma put his briefcase on a counter. “I do not know why I was sent this is supposed to be my day off.” McKinnes apologized for the inconvenience and explained that his services might be needed in the final interrogation. Not long after that the two suspects were brought into the room by Detectives Luigiano and Cenna. A table was cleared in the middle with simple chairs for the suspects to sit on.
Masons and Threefingers exchanged short looks but remained silent the entire time. After a few minutes the door opened again. It was Watari with a briefcase. He went about his business completely silent and immediately worked on setting up the notebook. The people in the room watched with great interest as Watari set up a complete rigging, connecting the note book to a beamer present in the lab. This time the notebook went accompanied with a web cam. When Watari was finally done he pushed the start button and stepped back into a corner where he waited.
After a few second a black L sign appeared on a white background. Masons and Threefingers looked at each other. “What is this!?” Threefingers asked. McKinnes commanded him to be silent. “This is the person that helped capturing you!”
Masons was startled by the sudden appearance of a voice on the notebook.
Greetings people from the San Francisco Police department, mr. Masons and mr. Threefingers. I have reached a conclusion in this difficult case. I will show you how the murders were committed by these two suspects and how they tried to avoid capture. First a compilation of the problems I encountered:
The beamer started up and a white screen lit up. A picture of three weapons appeared one by one.
As you all know we have three weapons in this plot and none of them seem to match any of the bullets fired at the crime scenes. The .357 Magnum rounds were only a partial match to mr. Threefingers weapon. The 9mm round was not a match to the 9mm handgun of mr. Threefingers. The .38 revolver did not match the .357 Magnum either. At first glance this seems to render all evidence useless.
[i]However mr. Threefingers blood was found on one of the crime scenes, he must have been there and is the shooter without a doubt. Despite of that it is mr. Masons that supplied the weapons and the know-how to mr. Threefingers. It was mr. Masons name that appeared in the puzzle letter I solved, not that of mr. Threefingers. This has led me to believe that mr. Threefingers had nothing to do with the writings, only the shootings. However the letters contain such detail that it is not possible to mr. Masons to know about this without talking to mr. Threefingers about it. Up until the arrest of the two in the mall there was still the possibility that mr. Threefingers just invented a name in the puzzle letter to throw the police off but now that the connection between the two gentlemen has been made there is no doubt that the two are working together, exchanging information and weapons. Mr. Masons used the name in the puzzle letter as a safety measure. He knew that if the police only arrested him, they wouldn’t be able to convict him. He used the puzzle letter as a warning, if the police found out that much it was time to be extra careful. Therefore after discovery he counted on the fact that he would be released as apparently an innocent man and he knew that it was time to take extra precautions in the shootings by swapping the weapons registered to mr. Threefingers with a clean weapon, not registered. This would be the .38 Auto. I can also affirm that mr. Masons shot at least one of the victims.
Masons couldn’t stand it any longer, stood up and yelled: “This is nonsense! As you said it yourself none of the bullets match the weapons!” Masons was pushed back into his seat.
Not yet mr. Masons but that is why I have called for professor Karuma to assist us. Detective McKinnes, please pick up the bullets lying next to the Styer 9mm pistol.
McKinnes picked up a bullet from the table. “And now?”
Pick up the .38 Auto and put the bullet in the chamber.
McKinnes picked up the .38 revolver, opened the drum and tried to enter the bullet into an empty chamber. The bullet slide in perfectly. “It...it fits!” he said astonished. The other detectives crowded together to have a look.
Please Detective McKinnes, fire a shot into the water tank then retrieve the bullet and give it to professor Karuma.
McKinnes put in two earpieces. “Cover your ears!” The other people covered their ears with their hands. A load bang shook the insides of everyone present. McKinnes quickly opened the water tank and searched for the bullet. Once he retrieved it he handed it over to professor Karuma.
Professor, please compare this 9mm round to the 9mm round found inside the victim.
Karuma put both bullets under the stereo-microscope and began turning them around a bit. “They match!” he yelled. Everyone stared at the suspects and then to the computer.
The 9mm round of Styer is 9.02mm in width and 23mm in length, these matches closely to the .38 Auto round of Colt, which are 9.04mm in width and 23mm in length. That is why the chamber of the revolver accepts Styer bullets. This proves that mr. Masons committed the shooting with the 9mm round since mr. Threefingers wasn’t in possession of that weapon at that time.
Linking mr. Masons to the letters, mr. Threefingers to a crime scene and to mr. Masons, they have both already admitted to all the murders in the letters. Now comes the question, why? The nature of the murders is the same as that of the real Zodiac killer but I see no real intent other then imitate the real Zodiac killer. I hope now that the suspects have been discovered they will give up their facade and tell us why they did it.
The room remained quiet for a short while. McKinnes gestured to Cenna with his hand. Cenna walked to the table where Masons sat quietly, staring at the notebook uninterrupted. Threefingers looked down at the table. “Mr. Masons and Mr. Threefingers, I arrest you for seven accounts of murder in the first degree, one account of attempted murder in the first degree and conspiracy to commit murder” Cenna said with a loud voice. The two men were taken out of the room. Watari stepped towards the notebook and started packing.
Once back in his office, McKinnes packed all the paper work together in the Zodiac copycat file. He stamped the file: “Closed” He opened a drawer and uncovered another file reading: Zodiac killer. Faded stamps read; Unsolved.
L will be back in a REAL LIVE murder case yet to be solved! L will return in: “L and the Manga investigation”
